Why It's Okay (and important!) To Be Different.

People can commonly be uncomfortable if they don't do things that society says they're 'meant to'. Truth is, it's absolutely okay to be different to the rest of the world, in fact it's actually a good thing. Here's why.

Ever since I was little I've always accepted and enjoyed being different. I still do. It's important to understand that we aren't talking about being different just for the sake of it. It's about doing what you want to do in life, even if it makes you unusual.

Life Is Short
Let's face it, life is short. It is FAR too short to just do what's normal because normal is BORING!  I've always liked the idea of finding opportunities outside of the 'norm' because I find regular life to be mundane. I don't like the idea of a steady, plain, stable 9 to 5 job, sitting on the couch when I get home, watching reality TV until it's bed time and waking up just go to back to the SAME job at the SAME place and pay the SAME bills until I retire on a tiny pension. This is REALITY for the MAJORITY of the ENTIRE WORLD!!!

It Makes You, YOU.
First of all, let's be honest. You don't want to be just like everyone else: not only is that boring, it's actually very limiting. By doing things differently to what everybody else does, it makes you unique as an individual. You create your own characteristics, your own archetype, you can develop a combination of personal and professional skill sets that make you a one-of-a-kind.

Embrace what makes you unique.

It Makes You Interesting.
Following on from my last point, you become a much more interesting person. Have you ever been out somewhere, and you ask someone what they do for a living, and when they give you a really random, uncommon, outside the box answer, you're so interested to hear more about what they do? The focus of this article is to be comfortable in your own skin, but it also makes you more appealing to other people because you're special and unusual.

It Gives You More Perspective.
Even if it's not in a major way, if you are living life slightly differently to the rest of society, you have a different mindset. You question the way things are they way that they are, what can be done differently, how to change things. If you're the same as everyone else, you'll just blend in and be part of this scary, repetitive community with tunnel vision that just makes you another sheep in the pack. This short inspirational video from the end of the movie 'Job's explains this perfectly.

It Makes You Stronger.
It can be exhausting being yourself when you live in a world where everyone else wants you to be something else. This is standard, we can't expect everyone to understand, but this makes you stronger as a person and it also makes you more self aware. Personal strength is critical to success in life, as well as accepting constructive feedback, whilst ignoring irrelevant criticism.

It Makes You More Accepting.
By being unique yourself, you listen better to members of your family, team and friends. You're far more welcoming to others that are doing their own thing. Lots of people in life will tell you you're silly for being different, that's just life. You don't need those people, and by meeting others that are like you, you connect quickly. Relationships are a perfect example of quality being more important than quantity.

Why fit in when you were born to stand out?

Never feel uncomfortable, inadequate or in any way negative for being yourself. Embrace what makes you unique, and realise the good in standing out from the pack!
