First of all - it's almost 2017 y'all! If you have a business and you STILL aren't putting out content, you're seriously behind, and you're also missing out on all the benefits. When it comes to content, video is absolutely skyrocketing, and I recommend it for everybody, which is why I've put together this post on how you can make HQ videos from home even if you're never done it before!

Look I don't want to bore you with stats, but in case you don't trust me when I say video is where it's at right now, here's 5 important figures:
Syndacast predicts 74% of all internet traffic in 2017 will be video.
51.9% of marketing professionals worldwide name video as the type of content with the best ROI.
- Videos on a landing page can increase conversions by 80% or more! (Yes that's an 80, not an 8.)
- "How to" searches on YouTube are up 70% year over year.
Between April 2015 and November 2015, the amount of average daily video views on Facebook doubled from 4 billion video views per day to 8 billion.
It's growing like crazy. Believe me! So how do we get started?
What you'll need.
- iPhone / Smartphone (with video capabilities).
- Background with neutral lighting (no bright sun).
- Gorilla pod / Tripod: $27
- Lapel microphone: $60
- Light: $50
To be honest you don't HAVE to have all of these, all you actually need is your phone. But for a small investment it makes a BIG difference. I just purchased a light, and the quality looks so much better. Make sure you're filming in a relatively quiet place so the audio isn't interrupted, and that the background is good to look at but not distracting. This can be a white wall, your office, a park or anywhere with a nice setting. If you're outside, just make sure there's no bright lights or sunshine, as it will look bad.
Now let's make this bad boy.
Making the video.
Videos are like a visual blog , and they require the same thought process. Before you start, you need to:
- Identify your audience
- Identify the key purpose and what they want to know
- Have an introduction, body and conclusion
- Include a call to action
Once you've got these, it's time to film it.
A video is obviously very visual - so make sure that you are enthusiastic and interesting. If it’s basic, a great video can be short and sweet. Anything over 3 minutes usually doesn't get watched unless it's some sort of tutorial. Fort quick tips, keep it short. The structure is as simple as:
- Introduce yourself and tell them what you’re going to tell them (Intro)
- Tell them! (Body)
- Tell them what you just told them (Conclusion)
It's as simple as that! You may have to practice a few times, but once you've got it, now you can put it together.
If you have a mac, iMovie is more than enough for what you're doing. If you have a PC, their movie maker will do the trick as well. It's very simple, all you do is:
- Upload the video to iMovie.
- Crop the start and the end so there's no awkward gap while you adjust yourself / grab the camera.
- Edit the audio to make it louder or quieter (usually louder). I like to watch another YouTube video or listen to a song and match the sound level so it sounds normal.
- Add music (optional - but often recommended).
- Add your information at the end, and if you've used someone else's music make sure you acknowledge them.
- Create a custom thumbnail for the video. Canva has free templates you can use here. Try to use text over it, because it gets a much higher click through rate.
- Export, upload and share!

- Make a compelling, search friendly title.
- Make the description accurate and full of keywords. The same applies for video tags.
- Introduce yourself and what you’re going to talk about.
- Add background music (most of the time).
- Create a custom thumbnail.
- Create an intro and outro for maximum results.
- Add annotations (on YouTube)
- Share everywhere!
- Tip: Make custom artwork for each platform for maximum results.
- Tip: Wednesdays are great for engagement.
Sharing: Facebook or YouTube?
Once you've made your video, you might wonder if you should upload it directly to YouTube, or Facebook, both. Here's the annoying answer you always get with these things: it depends. Let's take a look at why:
If you want to grow a channel and get discovered from your content via people searching for it, I recommend YouTube. It's the second largest search engine in the world and is a massive 11.3x larger than Facebook, in terms of hours viewed on both desktop and mobile. It's also a lost easier to embed in websites, email campaigns and other platforms.
Facebook has a more casual nature when it comes to videos, so it doesn’t have to be as formal or as structured as YouTube. You can often post a quick snippet direct from your phone with no editing. However, viewers have a far shorter attention span when it comes to Facebook, mostly because there’s a lot of distractions, and often they are not watching something they actively searched for. They’ve either stumbled across it, or a friend has tagged them in the comments. You need to make it short, sharp and sweet. Get right to the point. If you’re only giving them a quick piece of advice - don’t waste any time! That being said, it's still a great platform for the higher quality videos. Native videos uploaded to Facebook have a 10x higher reach compared to sharing YouTube links (this is because they're competitors).
CAN YOU DO BOTH?
Yes. I have a YouTube channel for The Exceptions where I exclusively post my videos, because it gets views through my subscribers and organic search. I also use it to help my SEO on my website. However for Mastered Marketing, I post it natively to my Facebook Page, because it gets more views amongst my friends and personal networks, which is where more of my business comes from. I do this because I want more people to see it, even if they're not my customers because they might have friends who are, and can personally refer me. Also, when I'm boosting a Facebook video it automatically plays, meaning I get more reach and view. It all depends on your audience, where they are, and what you want to achieve (that goes for all marketing!). So whilst you can do both, pick which one is more important and focus more of your energy on that.

With these tips you have more than enough information to start making your own videos! It's important to note that even though I mentioned things you can do to make it better, what's most important is the quality of the CONTENT and not the quality of the video.
